Is there a good reason for this, i.e. something in MiKTeX makes it superfluous, or is it merely that it's not made it in yet? Is there a clean way of installing packages whilst bypassing MiKTeX, or should I simply get 'import.sty' from CTAN, and place it appropriately within the textmf folder? Chris Key

That is a clean way of installing the package. MiKTeX wouldn't do much more. Don't forget to update the file database. -- Ulrike Fischer e-mail: zusätzlich meinen Vornamen vor dem @ einfügen. e-mail: add my first name between the news and the @.

Don't forget to update the file database. miktex would simply have saved the modest hassle[*] of doing the steps manually. avoiding this hassle has always seemed to me one of miktex's really strong points. [*] modest to you or me, a significant hurdle for someone who's not done it before, i imagine. -- Robin Fairbairns, Cambridge

The only criteria used is that the files are under a free license. However, in the case of import.sty, I guess it's just a case of human error. (Yes, Christian Schenck is human.) Instead of complaining, just file a feature request[1] at <http://sourceforge.net/projects/miktex> and Christian will include it in the next package update - like he always does. > > miktex would simply have saved the modest hassle[*] of doing the steps > manually. avoiding this hassle has always seemed to me one of > miktex's really strong points. Yes, it is. Hans [1] I would have create the feature request myself right now if hadn't been for the incredible slowness of sourceforge.net... -- The UK (La)TeX FAQ - http://www.tex.ac.uk/faq The Not So Short ... - http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~oetiker/lshort/lshort.pdf TeX at ODP - http://dmoz.org/Computers/Software/Typesetting/TeX/

(Yes, Christian Schenck is human.) yes. i had the distinct impression the one time we met that he didn't like me much. pretty ordinary human, in fact. >Instead of complaining, just >file a feature request[1] at <http://sourceforge.net/projects/miktex> >and Christian will include it in the next package update - like he >always does. do i need to know about miktex to do this? (so far, i know how to install it -- since i do that for users, and how to read the context of its .cab files using cabextract for linux.) -- Robin Fairbairns, Cambridge

I will create a new ltxmisc.cab.

Just remember to put it in your /localtexmf/ folder, otherwise you might lose it when updating miktex > > Chris Key Martin
