I live in Michigan and I have driven through that very intersection on my way to a convention in Lansing. Now there are an awful lot of things about Michigan highways that make no sense at all, but having a divided highway with a turn around is a vast improvement over having a center turn lane in the middle of an un-divided highway. Note: Michigan has only two seasons - winter and road construction. If you are from the U.P. [only the weather forecasters ever say Upper Michigan....] they are winter and "mighty poor sledding". :-).
