Common xlabel or ylabel

Is it possible for two subplots to share the same xlabel or ylabel?  If
not directly, is there a workaround for this?  I'd like to have something
like

subplot(2,1,1)
plot(...)
subplot(2,1,2)
plot(...)

and then I'd like a common ylabel that centers itself between the two
subplots.
