converting digital 8 tapes to dvd
I have an iMac G% with superdrive and a Son y digital 8 camcorder.
Can I convert tapes directly to dvd with this setup or do I need an
additional component in the middle? Thanks

If you can "see" stuff taken by video, e.g. its connected to mac OK,
you may gather the videos using iMovie and use "iDVD" to burn them to
DVD I guess.

I didn't buy iLife thing but the Apple installed versions are ok here

We have a digital 8 Sony (TRV 730). While I've never done it, the
manual (for the Sony) seems to indicate that you can do this. Myself,
I would capture the images first, and then prepare a nicely DVD, maybe
with a menu screen and so on. Also avoid buffer problems with the
burning software.

I think that's what you mean.

Try a Dazzle interface. I don't know the name of the mfr. offhand, but
you can find them at most RadioShack locations. Analog or DV inputs at
one end with the conventional cables, and the unit sends out signal via
USB 2.0. There may also be a FireWire 400-capable verison out, though I
haven't seen it anywhere so far.

Also. check TigerDirect.com or J&D Music (NYC) for their MonsterCable
sections. I seem to recall one converter cable for analog and another
one for Sony or Pana digital camcorders, though I'm not sure at what
retailer I saw them.

Hope this helps.

I'm not familiar with your camcorder, however:

1) If the camcorder has a DV type output on it (firewire), hook
it directly to the Mac and start up iMovie. You can then imprt it
directly into iMovie.

2) If the camcorder does NOT have a DV type output (i.e. it uses
a composite video output), you'll need some way to convert it,
i.e., a special device or a DV recorder that can do the
conversion hooked up between your camcorder and the Mac to
convert the audio and video outputs of the camcorder into a DV
type digital signal that the Mac can import.

A lot of new DV type camcorders can perform this conversion.
