numbering pages in pdf document

Hi all: here is probably a simple question.
There is a pdf document (the pages are not numbered initially) and now
I would like to number the pages using acrobat such that the page
numbers actually appear on the sheets when printing the document.

Any suggestions? Many thank! Thomas

Using open source converters available various places, convert back
from PDF to PostScript, edit in page number position and value before
each showpage call, convert PS back again to PDF.
