Re: GUI error: Could not find the main class. Program will exit.
the exact same error occurs for the swing HelloWorld demo from Sun.
moving the .jar's from one directory to another has no effect--both
.jar files execute fine from the command line but give that error with
a double click.

both .jar files open with "javaw" , which AFAIK is correct.
sorry, i'm not understanding your suggestion:(

It's a red herring.
I'm guessing your problem description is incomplete.
Post the jar.

It works fine for me:
Windows 2003 EE Sun JDK 1.5.0
Windows 2003 EE Sun JDK 1.4.2_04
Linux Mandrake 9 Sun JDK 1.4.2_02

Can you provide any additional information that would help reproduce your
problem?
Your problem description seems inconsistent.

what if:

from the command line?
