Programming Forum and web based access to our favorite programming groups.-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Does anyone use TkProE in developing Tk GUI's? I saw the announcement about it last summer, but have seen almost no discussion of it, pro or con. I did get it running on OS X, but for some reason the GUI did not translate well: menu buttons were clipped and ran into other frames, etc. The GUI problems were distracting enough that I couldn't grok how to use it. I don't hold that against the program's developer, who was targeting Linux and Windows. Anyway, I'd appreciate hearing about others' experiences with this app. Other Tk GUI builders, including SpecTcl and Visual Tcl, are in my experience unusable. Aren't there any people using TCL | GUI builders? Or is everyone just developing with an editor an the WISH | console??? | | Dennis LaBelle I think that most people actually *do* use the editor and the console. (Emacs + wish is my favorite.) Tk code is fairly easy to write compared to other languages, in my experience. I've used GUI builders, but they are true drag-and-drop: Qt Designer, Apple's Interface Builder. There's nothing available with Tcl/Tk that has this degree of ease of use. I looked at TkProE on a Windows machine and it looked a lot better/easier to use there than it does on the Mac, which is my main platform. Menu buttons, in particular, don't translate well to TkAqua (they are mapped as combo boxes); it's too distracting, unfortunately. If I were a Windows developer, I'd definitely give TkProE more of a look, because it seems like a more complete and promising GUI builder than the other apps I've looked at. Alas, I don't have time to hack the menu buttons into a menu bar. I'm actually curious about something: would TkProE have any ability to support the Tile widget extension? That's where I'm concentrating most of my development work these days (using Tile rather than core Tk). Hope this feedback is useful. Have you gotten any other feedback, perhaps off-list? - -- Cheers, Kevin Walzer, PhD WordTech Software--Open Source Applications and Packages for OS X http://www.wordtech-software.com http://www.smallbizmac.com http://www.kevin-walzer.com mailto:sw@wordtech-software.com -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.4 (Darwin) Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFByLusJmdQs+6YVcoRAgZyAJ9sv583FVJz MNryCubppClloethLACfSM0W Cil0G7EPiXqLw56FJr99nLs= =G6jW -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
