In fact, (and this may show that I am "wedded" to old habits), this was one 
of
the reasons that I used that technique.  For those familiar with IBM
(historical) stuff, a VSAM file (IBM's "ISAM implementation" - if you use IS
AM
in a generic sense) could be read as an IMS SHISAM database.  At one time (I
hope not currently) switching between the two was something that some shops 
and
some applications did.
