Programming Forum and web based access to our favorite programming groups.I have been away from Smalltalk for a long time. Smalltalk is my favorite language and I enjoyed working with it. I am always disappointed when I have to do some programming in another language. I think to myself, 'I could do this a lot faster in Smalltalk'. So, how are things going in this part of the world? Is there a growing Smalltalk following? What is the major dialect? The reason I am asking is we are getting ready to start a new project and I am looking for a programming language to use. The product will be client based for the first version but may be web based in the future. While I am on the subject, are there any Object databases worth using or should I stick with relational? Another on the subject question, are any of the old-timers from '92-'96 hanging around here? I really miss those guys. -- ****************************** Fred Parker Lynn Consulting Group, L.L.C. http://www.lynnconsultinggroup.com ******************************

My subjective opinion: there is a slow but steady growth in Smalltalk, after a disturbingly long lull. <...> > While I am on the subject, are there any Object databases worth using or > should I stick with relational? Our production system runs on GemStone/S ... it's solid. > Another on the subject question, are any of the old-timers from '92-'96 > hanging around here? I really miss those guys. I really miss those guys. Hi there. Well I have been hanging out sing the old Compuserve days. Nice to see you back. Go for Smalltalk - its the best way forward. We are using it at the moment for a client side diary management system that talks pretty seamlessly to our web based booking package. VAST makes most of this easy. To bang our own trupmet a bit, we use our own SocketSet product for the TCP/IP comms and our Tenacity OODB for the database. You might just like to see what we do with Smalltalk - it's all at http://www.totallyobjects.com. Regards David

I really enjoyed it, being all high tech and such in a shop that was all mainframe except for the application I developed. -- ****************************** Fred Parker Lynn Consulting Group, L.L.C. http://www.lynnconsultinggroup.com ******************************
Post Follow-up to this messageDavid, I seem to remember the name and I am sure we have chatted at some point along the line. Nice to hear there are still production Smalltalk apps. -- ****************************** Fred Parker Lynn Consulting Group, L.L.C. http://www.lynnconsultinggroup.com ******************************

Post Follow-up to this messageSame here. I have last used Smalltalk in 2000. Most of the companies in South Africa uses Java. Developers that I work with know very little of Smalltalk. It is a shame.
