I've been using vi since I started messing around with Linux. Our office uses the program Visual SlickEdit (http://www.slickedit.com) for our desktop editing. It's a Windows-based program, of course, but using the latest version of wine, and copying one DLL from a "real" Windows installation, it's up and working great. It's not cheap, but it's now what I use for all my source code editing. I'll still check it out, though - maybe I can dig around and see. Seems an old computer I bought came with Win98... You might try using Win4Lin from Netraverse.com. This provides an environment in which Windows 98se or ME can be installed into the Linux file system and then can be run as a window on one of your desktops. It actually can run a bit faster than when booted on the same machine because the ext2/3 filesystem is faster than FAT32. However, if your compiler uses a dongle and grubby hardware access that may be an issue. You should be able to get an 'try-before-you-buy' version, and as long as you have an existing Win98 install CD ... with valid licence of course.
