This must be relatively new. I heard a talk by some folks at Xerox
trying to do ubiquitous computing platforms complaining that X11R6
didn't actually keep enough state that you could basically move all the
windows from one display server to another and manage to pick up where
you left off.  So if you were working on your laptop, and walked back to
your office, you couldn't just log into your desktop machine and have
all the windows from your laptop show up on your desktop, without
modifying the protocol. Perhaps that's been done since then.
