OT:Automated Communications Software
Hi,

Does anyone know of any software that can dial up a remote PC, transfer
files and execute applications remotely. We currently use pcanywhere, but
the latest versions no longer have scripting and we have had problems
running under XP with version 9.2

Any help will be appreciated

Pete

Re: OT:Automated Communications Software
Pete,

Unfortunately, from what I understand. PCAnywhere is only XP compatible
with version 10.5 and later. You will have to upgrade if you wish to use
XP.

I recently 'rolled my own' using DLLs from marshallsoft.com

We ran into the same problem in '95, and wrote our own unattended
polling/transfer package in Clipper ("Telephone Poll"). Of course, that
only worked with DOS-friendly modems, which have not existed for years.
Pity, because it worked great.

For a while we steered our customers towards some high-end third party
package whose name I can't remember - but it was truly the most expensive
comm package in the world, and I wouldn't recommend it again even if I did
remember the name.

Nowadays most of our customers use either PC-Anywhere manually (you can
get the file transfer to work even if remote control craps out), email or,
if they're smart enough to find the ON switch without help, FTP. With a
little work you can set up a scheduled activity that will launch
your favorite FTP script, so in theory you could do that
overnight/unattended, although I don't know anybody who does.

Of course it would be a snap for Linux using anacron, but now I'm just
being mean :-)
