Programming Forum and web based access to our favorite programming groups.Hi, I was wondering if anyone would be willing to provide a copy of z/OS or OS/390, that I could use with the freeware Hercules mainframe emulator? I realize that what I am asking for is illegal. However, I'm sure there are others that can sympathize - I simply want a complete (and current) mainframe environment so that I can learn the operating system completely. My background is primarily Unix, but I have become acquainted with the mainframe over the last year, and have now written a few applications for it, including a CICS application written in C. I used to be an anti-mainframe bigot; now, I've become very fond of it. I love to learn new things, and the mainframe is an enormous opportunity for learning. I've already learned some very neat things, such as redirecting SYSIN and SYSOUT to HFS files, etc. Anyway, I see an opportunity to apply new technologies to the vast resources available on modern mainframe systems. To that end, I would really love to have a complete emulation environment that I could run on my laptop. It would, for example, enable me to test ideas and offer proposals that I could prototype in advance. I know that there is a commercial emulator - Flex ES - but I simply can't afford that. If anyone would be willing to send (through any mechanism) a copy of z/OS or OS/390 to me, I would greatly appreciate it. Or, if you have any other ideas on how to acquire the operating system (at little or no cost), please let me know. I've also heard of the "Application Developer" CD, and that this is one source of the operating system. Anyone have this? Or know how to obtain it legitimately? Please send any responses to: dave99682000@yahoo.com Also, please don't respond to this thread at all - negative or positive. I know that the Hercules developers want to avoid publicity regarding the issue of piracy of IBM operating systems. So, please, don't respond here. Please use the email address above. Thanks. And I apologize in advance if this post irritates some of you. My _intentions_ are good - i.e., learning the mainframe so that I can promote its use with new technologies. Dave

Other people want a car so they don't have to take the bus to work... do you mind if they steal yours? DD

Of course I can't agree more with you if the OP intends to use the package in a professional environment. (expensive package = plane, educational purpose = learning to fly). I'm sorry if I wasn't very clear.

Oh... so he should not steal a car to get to work but only for recreational purposes? That makes even less sense. Perhaps I view this simplistically. The original author wanted to be able to use a product without paying for it; he also acknowledged his desire could result in theft. > >(expensive package = plane, educational purpose = learning to fly). > >I'm sorry if I wasn't very clear. In this posting you seem to be clear... but your clarity leads to 'Theft is fine as long as it is towards amateur ends.' DD

I'm sure that the original poster could attend IBM educational classes to learn more about the operating system. If that is beyond his means, it wouldn't be the first time that money got in the way of dreams. As to your analogy, why would one want to learn to fly if he/she had no prospect of ever getting into an airplane? You don't have to buy, but you do have to rent at a cost of hundreds of dollars. A huge amount can be learned about z/OS simply by downloading and reading the IBM manuals, which are freely available from IBM's Web sites. Tinkering with the operating system is a luxury that no systems programmer is allowed, as far as I know. Bringing down a mainframe computer due to experimentation is frowned upon, as it inconveniences in some cases tens of thousands of users. The Flex ES based IBM Thinkpad can be had from T3 Technologies for around US$400 / month, from what I've read.
