Host based printers
When considering a new printer, beware of Host based printers.

It is a printer intended for MS Windows printing only. It is usually less
expensive because it lacks the tiny chip that processes PCL, G/L, and PS.
It uses Windows for all printing functions and nothing else.

What that means is NO PCL or GL support.

If you are sending any PCL commands to the printer it will not work. It
does not understand
MOVE X"1B266C31" TO PRINT-REC.

Do not assume that all printers come with the standard electronics package
anymore. Printer manufacturers are saving cost by eliminating the chip that
drives the PCL language. They are assuming that most printers are utilizing
MS windows. A case in point is the HP-3500 laser which does not support
PCL, but the HP-3700 supports it. The HP-3500 will only work on MS-Windows
and not on anything else such as Unix, MS-DOS, or Windows applications
running in DOS.

Check out the specs on the box, and be sure that it has PCLx and PS support.
Do not assume it has it.
