When IBM went from OS/VS COBOL to VS COBOL II, they dropped MANY of their
earlier extensions (e.g. TRANSFORM and ON statement) as well as '68 Standard
features (e.g. NOTE statement and EXAMINE).  Micro Focus maintained (and
maintains) compatibility with OS/S COBOL as one of its dialects. Therefore, 
if
you turn on OSVS reserved words, EXAMINE will work - even if you aren't tryi
ng
to use Micro Focus extensions.

IBM also had (and has) automated tools for converting older (no longer
supported) syntax to newer syntax.  If you can do an automated conversion an
d
use "new/ current Standard" syntax, I can't see any reason NOT to drop the o
lder
forms.
