With government, it's never about the money. We could spend as much money as the war costs studying the reproductive habits of oysters, in addition to the war, if we want. It's false logic to complain: "If it weren't for the cost of the war, we could..." It's been fifteen years since we had a war. We need one every couple of decades to keep our fighting skills sharp and provide an incentive to the warrior class. Somebody enlists with the hope of running to the sounds of the guns sometime before he retires. It's worth pointing out that 85% of those who've served in Iraq or Afghanistan re-enlisted. The remainder retired, died, or invalided out. In five years, only six members of the military concluded they made a mistake and decided to be long-haul truckers, the rest want the opportunity to kill more gremlins.
