(OT) Canada vs New Zealand
I know there are some people here who live in Canada.

On Saturday, Canada plays New Zealand at Rugby. The match will take place in
Hamilton (North Island, a main centre in the Waikato valley, South of
Auckland.)

Rugby is not really Canada's game, whereas here it is a religion.

Canada has NEVER beaten NZ at this game.

(Imagine if Saturday is an upset, and the visitors actually beat the All
Blacks....:-)

The Waikato has always been fiercely supportive of Rugby and they take it
VERY seriously... :-)

Apart from the fact that it is an international match, you can bet there
will be a fiercely partisan crowd at the grounds. There is a small chance
that I may be present (it is about an hour from where I live and I have some
friends who are going).

Obviously, my allegiance is to NZ, but the Canadians are decided underdogs,
and, it would be good to see them do well...:-)

I don't know whether it will be screened in Canada but it certainly is being
here.

All Black international matches start with the traditional Maori haka
(pronounced: 'harker'), which is a challenge and war dance and also serves
to get the team warmed up physically and mentally. I understand there is a
new haka being used for certain matches, so it will be interesting to see if
the the old one or the new one is used for the Canada game. (The old one was
written in the 19th century by a famous chief called Te Rauparaha, when he
was captured by the British and imprisoned in a deep pit (they didn't have a
jail handy). The words are quite moving, but I won't go into them here...
those interested can read it, with a translation, here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ka_Mate

Almost haiku-like in its simplicity, he escaped from the pit and lived to
fight another day... (If Saturday's match starts with "Kamate! Kamate!..."
you can bet it will be a serious game...:-))

Just wanted to wish any Canadian supporters the very best; hope it is a good
game and whether you win or lose, may your performance reflect "mana" on
you :-)

Pete

No, it certainly wasn't. I already mentioned the spectacular try the
Canadians scored from an interecpt; it was pretty to watch and brought the
crowd to their feet. (As Lord MacCaulay once remarked: "Even the ranks of
Tuscany could scarce forebear to cheer.." :-))

While everybody here was pleased with a win, there is considerable
dissatisfaction with the AB performance which was decidedly scrappy on
occasion. The Canadian defence was excellent and they played with heart and
soul. I think it was superior AB fitness that just wore them down in the
second half.

We play the Springboks in South Africa on Saturday and that will be touch
and go...I'll certainly be recording it.

Rugby is a beautiful game when played at the highest levels :-)

Pete.

Women's Rugby is growing in popularity here. Whether the participants
qualify as babes is probably in the eye of the beholder... :-)

Pete.

Yes, but they don't stay looking like babes for long. How many babes
have you seen with cauliflower ears?

Now you want us to believe you even notice the ears?

Sure.

I wonder what Lord MacCaulay would utter about that?

I remember a philosophy student once telling me "Tastes are not to be
judged but the taste's object is'!

How about some links where one can judge them amazons, old Pete?
