What sort of structure is "google (the mentor)"? Do they have any
specific personal biases or leanings as regards to oss? What do they
like? Who are they?

We have a number of people here who will mentor student particpants.
We obviously like open source.

Where are the rest of the guys, Chris? Is "the g-man" a part of the
group as well? Are you yourself part of the selection group?

Chris DiBona

I am part of the group, of course, but we have a number of people.
But I'm not going to name them all here. If by g-man, I'm assuming you
mean googleguy, and no, he's not taking part in this.

Actuall I meant "-g", greg stein.

Yes, greg is involved, he's running this program with me.

Any way to put in words the type of OSS projects you or your helpers
might like?

Chris DiBona

Not at this time. We're actually pretty happy seeing what people are
submitting. Consider what google does and the kinds of problems we
like to solve. Machine learning, etc..

What do you mean? The code that we use to run the various Google
services? No, that is not open source.

Students and their proposals that are selected by Google will need to
produce open source software, just like any other organization. This
is covered in the FAQ.

Ok, not trying to start a flame war or anything of the sort, I'm just
curious. I've often tried to figure out how OSS companies can make
money. Tech support for one, but aside from that....? Can someone
tell me what Google's take on this is? Some closed source and some
open source or is it all closed source? If it is all closed source,
(and here comes the part that may trigger a flame war) what is google
doing differently from microsoft to be so popular?

Again, not trying to incite anyone or anything, just been wondering
about this for a long time.

So when people compare Google to Microsoft, I realize very quickly that they
are familiar with neither. It isn't really my business to tell you about
microsoft.

It is to talk about google now and then, first I'll ask you if you've seen
the stuff we've released froom code.google.com <http://code.google.com>, and
past that the number of googlers who take part in open source projects is
fairly impressive and we'll note that as we see fit. Google uses and creates
proprietary software. Google uses, creates and takes part in open source
software. Then there is the research we sponsor and programs like these and
code jam which I think are pretty terrific for computer science.

We're popular because....well, you can answer that. I think we're popular
because people find what we do interesting and useful. Also I think we're
popular because, in the end, we don't hate our users and we act accordingly..

This is really not about the summer of code though, so lets not let this get
out of hand, okay?

Put simply - Google is liked because, unlike Microsoft, it has morals
and in general isn't evil. They do some awesome things such as
code.google.com and Summer of Code.

Of course sometimes I have my doubts. It seems they are pretty harsh
to the people trying to create interesting hacks to Google services
such as GMaps and GMail. If it were for commercial use that is
understandable but when it's not then it's questionable to sue them
IMO. IMO publicly exposed interfaces are open game for personal
hacking.

Either way.. Google is much less evil than Microsoft. Google is
awesome. Microsoft sucks. ;)

look Chris, if I know nothing of either thats fine, thats why I asked.
Thank you for your comments about google, however, with the exception
of the normal anti-microsoft slogans, I have not seen a whole heck of
a lot (maybe I'm just that misinformed). However, your right, this is
not about the SoC so I will drop this thread.

And this is why Google is liked, but I am not necessarily liked...

I didnt' mean to insult you (I really didn't), but comparing Google to
Microsoft is like comparing, well, apples and a big freaking crate of
oranges.

I for one think it's more like comparing a rotten (but yet still
eaten) egg to..... a large basket of ripe-to-perfection strawberries.=20
* I'll let the readers decide who is who :-) *
As for Chris & Greg, I think the two of you have been excellent google
representatives.

If you want to be a cynic to all big name companies, then go ahead, I
personally prefer to compliment the ones that are making the business
and personal world better. I'm sure they're not perfect, but they're
much closer then most of the others out there.
