Well, at least you'll get a status update: CrossFPC now is able
to compile visual CLX applications which seem run just fine on all=20
Linux distros, including 64bit ones. Database applications based
on DBExpress also compile, this part currently is in testing phase.

Work for other Kylix technologies is in progress.

The reason we didn't release a public beta yet is this: The
installation process is complex. CrossFPC will be supporting several
Delphi versions/editions. As the Delphi CLX/VCL is used by CrossFPC,
this means that the installer needs to be compatible with all versions
of the CLX and VCL from Delphi 6 on, which is quite a lot. This is
especially true as for the current CrossFPC beta a small patch to the
CLX bindhelp unit is required.=20

Anyway, a public beta of CrossFPC is to be expected in the very near
future. Probably less than 2 ws, but don't nail me on it.
And I don't see any urgency at all really - for now Kylix
and CrossKylix are fine to do the job, after all the goal of CrossFPC
is to provide a path for the *future*.

Does it mean that FPC is now able to eat .dfm's and Windows resources?
No .lfm and {$I Form1.lrs} ?!

Yes, together with the FPC team I've implemented this.

However, please remember that FPC itself is off-topic here (most of this
thread already got cancelled due to this).

Great news, indeed!!!

It means, Borland is starting to feel FPC heat! A very
similar scenario lead to 3 releases of Interbase in
very short time.

Borland doesn't cancel here, TeamB does. I have no idea what you mean by
InterBase and since I'm considered part of the core team for IB I'd know just a
little bit more than you about what drove (or in this case had absolutely no
impact at all on) InterBase development over the past 5 years.

sorry for being unclear. Is there a newsgroup or something like that
where FPC (hopefully including CrossFPC) is dealt with.

Not on the Borland news server. I'm sure FPC has their own forums. Go check
out the FPC page and go there.

I have some questions and comments, and interest.. I have never used CrossFPC but plan to
check it out due to our similar interests!

Do you still have to have a real linux box in the room to test the applications created?
Since all applications need to be tested after they are compiled....

I'm thinking fakelinux could be integrated into crossfpc so at least command line programs
and web applications could be tested from within MS Windows too, not just compiled there. I
will look into the projects and see what is possible!

Personally, I think the market for Linux applications is web server programs, daemons,
command line programs, and websites, rather than visual applications anyway. X windows could
be used one MS Windows if really needed, but by that point I think people would rather just
develop on a real linux system. But for server programs, mailing programs, CGI, and command
line programs.. it's a different story - local artificial (fake) linux testing and local
fake apache is very reliable and capable, X-windows probably not as much so, and probably
not as much demand. Do people even sell X-windows apps? Tons of people sell
server/command/consulting on linux which suites the server again.

No, CrossFPC is a third party project.

Jeff was talking about FPC, which have their own forums. I expect
they'd welcome discussions about CrossFPC there.

And the CrossFPC part of this conversation has not been canceled. The part that
is FPC only related or has no relation to any Borland products has need
canceled. Members of this group have been reminded multiple times about using
this forum to promote and talk about competing products only. The warnings are
now over, and posts that are just promoting competing products in this group
will just be canceled.
