It depends.

It depends on what kinds of testing you wish to perform.
- Functional?
- Link checking?
- Load?
- Security?
- Internationalization?
- Usability?

It depends on what kind of abilities you have.
- Programming ability?
- none?

It depends on your budget.
- none?
- little?
- money is no object?

It depends on the size of the team.
- just you
- a small team
- a large team

It depends on the platforms on which you need to test.
- Windows?
- Linux?
- Mac?
- some of the above?
- all of the above?

It depends on attributes of the web applcation being tests.
- plan HTML?
- dynamic content?
- lots of non-standard controls?

That's a very general question, but maybe a unifying concept
is that it is "web testing" and that means that very likely
you will be trying out something (a website, a web e-commerce
application, a web service, etc.) that is viewed over the web
by a browser.

That said, what you might want to examine, from the "tester's"
perspective, are things like:

* Page contents -- what is (and what isn't) in a page as
viewed in a browser.

* Page performance/response time -- including, if you can
get it, the detailed times of each page component.

* Whether a user input produces a particular response --
that is, validation of a result to have a particular state
or a particular value.

* Whether all of the links on a page you are looking at
actually work?

* How much an e-commerce transaction slows down when 10 or
100 or more users are all doing the same thing at the same time?

Of course, it can get a LOT more complicated, but this kind of
thing is what generally is meant by "web testing".

The simple idea of doing these kinds of test and analysis
functions using an actual instrumented browser -- which is the
eValid approach -- has the added advantage that it eliminates
most platform issues. That is, what you are testing is the
user's view of what is sent over the web to a browser, which
is what's most important. It's truly WYSIWYG.

What is "web testing"?

a) enforcing fishing regulations
b) testing the quality of spider silk
c) analysing the social web
d) ...

Hmmm. Very good analysis any way.
Definitely think these points while going for any testing tool. It may
be open source or license tool.

I'm thinking of becoming a veterinarian. What kind of drugs should I
use on animals?

(Apparently you have some ideas about the animals and the diseases
that you believe that they might have. Wouldn't this information make
for a higher-quality answer?)
