Need u help about performance testing

| Dear all,
I'm a newcomer for the performance testing. In the current working, I
must create the test scenarios like users do.
For example, i would configure with office apps and some gaming sw, and
take performance measure to get a baseline. After that, try to use
office apps/gaming software with testing application installed. I
wanted to know if the software has slowed down. I'm appreciated with
any suggestion or comment.
Thanks,
Jessie

So many questions:
Could you explain why you are doing this i.e. what is your objective?
What exactly are you going to measure?
What are you pass/fail criteria?
What actions would occur if tests fail?
Is one baseline enough? If you are testing apps on a PC, should you
consider different operating systems, CPUs, disks, memory sizes?
Mark.

| Hi Mark,
Thanks for you reply. I wanted to know if the testing software didn't
influence the previous installed applications. As well, I wanted to
know if the software has visible distinction under different network
(802.11b/g and 802.3) Yes, i would test this on different OS and
compare the amount of CPU and Memory usage after installed the testing
software.
I would pass the test if the result is acceptable from a user's
perspective. If the tests result failed to produce the desired effect,
I though the software should be updated or there is clarify in related
documents.
Except the application performance and wireless 802.11b vs. 802.11g
performance, did you give me any suggestion about the performance
testing?
Any suggestion or comment is appreciated! Thanks a lot!
Sincerely yours,
Jessie

| Jessie,
One good site to start with is Scott Barber's site at
http://www.perftestplus.com
Scott has written a whole set of articles on creating realistic usage
and performance testing in general.
All these articles are available on his site.
