Not here: I have a teTeX 3.0 tree here. Compiled from sources without
special configure options, and Metafont uses X. In addition, there is a
mf-nowin. The teTeX from Debian, which I actually use for production,
has binaries 'mfw' (with X support) and 'mf-nowin' with an additional
link 'mf -> mfw'. I don't know where you got you teTeX from, but maybe
it has a binary caled 'mfw' or such?
