Or get a more recent IDE... I mean what is the reason for using an 9 years
old IDE, while there is a much better and recent one? It's also free.
Which makes me wonder; are there any features that VS 6.0 has and others
don't? Which makes almost all universities use it instead of say VS2005 or
even VS2003? Is it more standard compatible or something? I've read many
articles which say it's not; also I've experienced this myself...

So what's the catch? If any...

Abdo:

There may be many reasons to move away from VC6, but IMHO the IDE is
most certainly not one of them. VC6 is a mature product with 6 service
packs. The IDE is very stable. I have not started using VC8 yet, but I
see a lot of complaints about the IDE on these newsgroups. And I find
the IDE in VC7.1 a great downgrade from VC6, at least for MFC work. For
example, create a new dialog class and start adding member variables for
the controls.

VC8 doesnt jump in to the code every time you add a member variable, hurrar!
^_^

If its anything like my university, its because the IT techs don't know how
to install it, the lecturers dont know how to use it, or they dont know it
exists.
