Author VB6 or .NET
Rich Hollenbeck

I am currently running VB6 from Visual Studio 6 Enterprise Edition. I'm in
the middle of a download from Microsoft for the .NET Framework Version 2.0
Redistributable Package. What difference will that make, if any? Where do
I go to get, in a nutshell, information about what I'm getting myself into?
Oops! That massive file just finished downloading. I have about a dozen
other files I need to download, but I have no idea if this will even work.
I suppose I also need to learn a new language to get into the .NET thing.
Too complicated! I need to have somebody break it down for me. Am I
replacing my old Visual Studio for something new and different? I feel old
and retarded. What's so great about .NET? Somebody please give me a clue.
:-) I'm going in a zillion directions, and I beg forgiveness for my
scatterbrained approach here. I'm trying to install #develop but I needed
to get the .NET framework first. I don't even know what I'm doing.

When you download the free version I don't think you get an IDE at all. it
might be easier to purchase one of the express versions, they are cheap and
easy. Doing it all for free is more complicated I believe, you need to use
command lines to compile etc.

Nope Michael

# Develop has an ide and you can compile from it

if you want to switch to a free IDE # develop is pretty good

And you do not need anything more as the standard .Net requirments ( ADO ,
IE and framework )

Rich and Michael,

Why not go with VB-2005 and get the latest .NET along with a VB IDE?
Last I checked, it was all FREE (and gigantic).

Ok, I was aware that free IDEs are available but I was talking about
microsoft.

Maybe you can tell what you are up to. What you want to do etc.

Different people like different things.

For me, I am not a C programmer but I am familier with Assembly Language
(6502 codes) since I grow up with the Apple 2 computer that uses BASIC and
Assembly Language together. I can (used to) type my program with Hex codes
with my bare hand for the Apple.

I think the whole .NET thing is more about 80% marketing. The people who
use your products will not give a damn on what you use anyway. But then
again, if you can drive a car, there is no point to ride a horse.

Unless you can't get the fuel. There are many situations where a horse is
an effective choice just as there are many situations where VB6 is an
effective choice. Newer and/or more powerful is not always better.

You were not reading it correctly. I was typing "HEX" codes like this:

A6 03 C3 01 60, etc to program my Apple 2.

I read it perfectly. Did everyone else use gloves at the time?

I know of someone who's worth $billions, yet chooses to use many MANY times more
horses (and pack-mules) than Hummers. Doubtless you've even heard of him many times
in the news.

Cleanly, that person is not helping the economy by not wasting fuel (or
wasting anything). I bet he/she is the one who drive GM to the poor house,
and fire so many people, and move all the jobs to Mexico or India.

Ignore the trolls. Clear thinking people know what you meant. fwiw, it was
6809's here. Haven't seen a 6502 for ages.

To be my surprise, many embeded controllers still use the 6502 and Z80.
One of my friends fixes trains for living. He told me that he needed to
learn the instruction sets for the Z80 to fix the controllers for the train.
But then again, these two processors are easy to program and very cheap to
buy.

P.S. How long will we keep all these out of topic posts?

They're here for life.... or, until Google decides to
compact/compress/whatever it does to free some space. I know Google cleans
the archives once in a while. I used to have links to threads that discussed
some very common questions... links no longer work and threads are gone for
good (arghhh).
