Author new WM5 Smartphones with touch screen?

I just noticed that the new WM5 Smartphone emulator sends WM_LBUTTONDOWN
messages with (x, y) pointer coordinates when clicking on the display of the
Smartphone emulator.

Does this mean that soon, some new WM5 Smartphone devices will have touch
screens?

I was always under the impression that the major difference between Pocket
PC and Smartphone was that only Pocket PC had a touch screen - hence a
different UI on the Smartphone, that is designed use without a pointing
device.

Is MSFT changing that and paving the way for the upcoming release of some
WM5 Smartphones with a touch screen?

I would not conclude this from your observation. The very first Smartphone
2002 emulator had a touch screen (this behavior has been fixed in later
versions of the emulator), but since then all Smartphones have been released
without a touch screen.

so you think they just broke something in the WM5 Smartphone emulator (i.e.
accidentally brought back the touch-screen feature)?

i think maybe this is part of their plan to eventually "merge" the Pocket PC
and Smartphone platform in a united platform that will be binary-compatible
between the two :) - nicknamed "Photon". i heard...

we'll see...!

Yeah - then Smartphone users will be able to share in the simple pleasure of
searching for their lost stylus...

Those messages just come from the shared windowing infrastructure between
the platforms. I wouldn't make any predictions or draw any conclusions from
it.

I also think PPC and Smartphone gap is diminishing. Inclusion of soft
keys in windows mobile pocket pc is one step in this direction. I hope
after 2 more versions we won't have different platforms of smartphone
and ppc. Only windows mobile will be there and that will come with
different screen sizes and resolutions. Square screen PPC is also
another step in that direction.

Interestingly palm calls its Treo700W a smartphone. Treo has been
palm's name for its smartphone line. But technically and in MS terms
Treo700W is a sqaure screen PPC Phone edition.

When there is only one platform developers need make sure their
applications work also without touch screen. Actually, since WM5 PPC has
softkeys, all applications should already work without touch screen.
Touch screen just makes things easier for the user, but it should never
be required by the application.

Of course!

But that's not the case for Pocket PC today - even something as simple as
answering an alert-box (MessageBox) on a Pocket PC requires touching the
screen.

I totally agree!

Clearly, any app released for Smartphone had better work _well_
without a stylus. But I think some apps really won't.

Our primary application is essentially for data collection, and the
tools we provide would be much harder to use without some sort of
touch screen. Partly because we often provide quick access to a choice
of tools, and even navigating among the tools would be challenging.
Also, we use menus to provide a rich set of auxiliary tools, and
shoving all these tools into two menus would add confusion and extra
strokes. So I'm very reluctant to port this app to Smartphone. (I
already have code that compiles and "runs", but without any ability to
navigate among the controls.)
