Special character problem

This is probably a very simple thing, but I'm stuck.
On a Smartphone 2003SE, I run an application with a number of edit controls.
Everything works as expected *unless* I press-hold # to get the to page with
special characters.
I get to the special character page, I select a character, I get back
and...nothing.
The character I selected is not inserted in the edit control. Probably
because the control no longer has focus. No control has focus.
Is there a message I miss? Am I notified in someway when the special
caharacter page is displayed (as with expanding spinboxes)?
