Author Pass the Apache security through to the CGI script- How to?

Using Debian/Apache.

I use the apache httpd.conf script
location /location

to make a user give a login and password to get into my server. Works
good, but

Everytime my CGIs write a file it is with the owner and group "www-data",
rather than the actual login name. Which I am sure is normal since I have
not figured out how to pass the information through. Using the
environment variables just gives some hard to decipher apache errors so
far. Still hacking on that.

My books talk around the subject, but don't really get to it or at least I
don't recognise it if they do.

Anybody here that can clue me into what I am missing?

Thanks anybody.

Bob Hardy.
Delphi heavy but absolute CGI newbie.
