Author picture-archive software for Linux?
cl

Hi,
I am looking for a archiving-software for pictures to run under Linux.
Something like Thumbs plus or ACDSee, running with MySQL or so would be
perfect. The installation should be easy because I am not very skilled in
Linux OS.

Has anyone a suggestion? Thanks for help and happy new year!

Hi,
Look here. http://www.linuxappfinder.com/graphics/photomanagers

Is picasa something? Picasa runs onder Linux; It has some XMP support
(i say: some!) and i hope in the future it gets more. The advantage is
that you can use your pictures in a win-picasa environment, because
picasa stores basic information in a picasa-file, stored in the same
folder as the picture. When you put your pictures on a external HDD,
you always take your settings with you. O no, thats not true ... picasa
uses also an extra database. I'm not sure if there's any workaround for
this.

I would recommend a tool which stores all added meta-information
(captions, keywords, rating, ...) in the picture files. There are
standards around for this, like IPTC and XMP. This is very handy as
backup is very easy and consistent and the information stays with the
pictures even if you send your pictures by email or if they are
downloaded from a website.
Another big benefit of this approach is that you are not bound to any
software and operating system. You can switch anytime to another
archiving-software as long as it supports the IPTC or XMP standards.
However to support fast searches the meta-information should also be
stored in a database.
Mapivi (http://mapivi.de.vu) for example implements this concept using
IPTC for JPEG images.

Martin

Coming from windows, have a look at the table of equivalents:

Running with mysql.... I am not very skilled with databases, but in case
you are familiar with webdesign: I know that there are many webbased
(serverside) apps written in PHP. They use mysql --> perhaps a CMS (like
joomla) has photo archiving modules.

Joomla as photo archiving? O please not ... i run my site on Joomla
(=i'm not a Joomla hater), but all my pictures are hosted elsewhere.
For some pictures (like a portfolio) Joomla-addons are ok. But the
topicstarter asks for a solution to manage pictures on his standalone
PC / usage for his own. A CMS is not build for such a task!

For personal use, you should install gallery2 (webbased) or mapivi
(also some kind of webbased, because it's using perl??? I'm not sure
about this ;-)

No, Mapivi (and also Perl) is not webbased in any way.
The only thing related to the web is the possibility to generate static
picture gallery web pages.

Ok, i was wrong. I know perl only from webbased environments, so
therefore i concluded it was webbased :-)

Same for me, when i saw OP's request for MySQL i thought he was looking
for something webbased ;-) then Joomla is the first thing that comes to my
mind
