I am developing a hardware/software product that I would like to consider
releasing in a open source community.

Can anyone help me understand how this would be a viable business model?

Currently we expect to release the hardware and allow the software to be
opensource, so the hardware would be our income revenue. Problem being is
competition could make their own hardware and compete with us.

Trying to be open minded but also trying to make a living - any suggestions?
