Email Service/Server(s) health monitor

I'm looking for a piece of software (i'd rather not use a service) to
monitor a bank of mail server. I'd like a pretty high level test in that I
want it to just send a message and then recieve the sent message in x amount
of time. If the time window is not met I'd like the system to start sending
alerts. (of course through a different mail server)

I know of one service called ReCon, but there must be a piece of software
out their that does this.

any suggests?
