Anyone out there know if there is a word processing program out there
that does not require X window? Under DOS WAY back I had something
called Word Writer. Anything under Linux?

Yes:

* pico
* emacs
* vim
* joe (Wordstar-like commands)
....

All these have console, text only modes.
