I have an older machine. Is open office normally a slow program. MS Word is
much faster to open.

Define "older machine"? Granted, I have a fairly state-of-the-art computer
(one of the "downsides" of being an avid gamer), but OO actually always
seemed faster than Office XP to me. I dropped my (fully paid for) Office XP
for OO, and it works just fine on my system. Also, which version of Word
are you using?

But MS Office cheats. Alot of the dlls it uses are already loaded into
memory. OOo doesn't have that advantage but you'll find that if you
have the quickstarter enabled, load it so the libraries are loaded,
close it and open it again then the second time will be roughly as fast
as Word.

Which OOo version are you using?

I'm using OOo 2.0 betas (1.9.122) in a K6II 64meg box and I haven't
any complain about performance, and the stability is very good too. It
has some strange quirks and bugs, but not so bad...
