Q 1 - Train Reservation System
We need to create a train reservation system . There are 72 berths per coach. The requirement is that, when a group of people come for the reservation, they would like the seats to be allocated as close as possible to each other. As is in the real life situation, there are 8 berths per block (6 normal berths and 2 side berths).

Conditions to consider:
a. If the seats are not available in a single block, the seats from the nearest block need to be reserved for the individuals in the group.
b. If the age of a passenger is more or less than a threshold age then he or she need to be provided a lower berth if available.

Q 2 - Cash Register
There is a cash register which helps the super market chain pay change for the customers. The requirement is that we need to develop a software module which calculates the change and helps the cashier handle cash transactions. As an example: Let’s say the customer paid Rs. 100 and the cost of the items he or she purchased is Rs. 76. The cashier needs to return Rs. 24. The condition that needs to be satisfied by any change machine is that the notes of the highest denomination need to be disbursed first. Let us say the cashier had two 10s and only one 2 and five 1 rupee notes with him or her. He or she needs to return two 10s, one 2 and two 1 rupee notes.

Conditions to consider:
a. Give away the highest denomination note first.
b. If notes are not missing then go to the next denomination.
c. If a specific condition like 500's need to be retained, how could that be implemented?

Q 3 - Timetable Scheduling
For a school, an application needs to be developed that helps in scheduling the time table for the students. The system needs to take the inputs such as number of classes, sections per class, number of teachers per each subject and period duration. It needs to generate a time table that could be used for conducting classes.

Conditions to consider:
a. A teacher cannot have more than three hours of classes in a day.
b. A student should be able to choose his or her optional subjects & the classes for the optional subjects should be held at the same time so that all students get to attend their optional subjects simultaneously.

Q 4 - Route Optimizer
We need to develop an application to schedule the routes of a transporter truck. The truck needs to pick up goods from various locations and drop the goods at other locations. The application should provide a mechanism to enter the routes, rate them in terms of priority and ease of travel (lesser traffic and better roads).

Conditions to consider:
a. Picking up alternate routes in case of traffic jams.
b. Picking up routes with multiple destinations.

Q 5 – Grading Application
We need to develop an application, which helps the staff of a school grade their students. The grading system in this particular school is decided dynamically based on various factors including:

a. The maximum marks, the minimum marks and the average marks obtained by the students in the entire school.
b. The feedback given by the students on the complexity of each exam. They are supposed to fill in a simple question after the end of the exam mentioning a number between 1 and 5. (1 being the most complex and 5 being very simple.)

All the students need to be graded and their grades have to be one of the following.

30 – 45 marks – Grade 1, and so on.
Based on the factors mentioned earlier, assume that the students take the exam for each subject and each subject needs to be graded.
b. The application should also group the students into each Grade in each subject based on the score they received.

Q 6 – String Management API
An organization builds content analysis and content management solutions. The organization has decided to write its own API to help programmers in creating their day to day programs.

A few functionalities that they would need are:
a. To concatenate the first 3-4 words in each sentence to create a high level paragraph summary.
b. To concatenate the first sentence in each paragraph to create an article summary
c. As we need to keep the sentences short, a program is required to prompt the users when the sentence size crosses a certain threshold. The threshold being a parameter that can be configured/ mentioned by the user.

Q 7 – IT Help Desk
An IT Manager in an organization needs to create a help desk solution to allow his or her support engineers handle all the desktop support requests.

The application is supposed to take in requests from users with information related to the complaint and the location of the complaint. The received information then needs to be redirected to the corresponding support engineer. The received requests are then maintained in a queue for the support engineers to open each individual request and respond to them sequentially.

Q 8 – Bill of Material
A bill of material is a formally structured list for an object (semi-finished or finished product), which lists all the component parts of the object with the name, reference number, quantity, and unit of measure of each component. A bill of material can only refer to a quantity greater than or equal to one of an object. It is a product data structure, which captures the end products, its assemblies, their quantities and relationships.

An organization needs to create an application to capture the bill of material and present them on the fly for the production staff to create the product, place orders for raw materials and so on.

e.g.: In this case, Part A consists of Part B and D. Part B consists of Part E & F and so on with the corresponding quantity.

a. The application should allow entering, modifying and viewing the bill of material in a tree structure.
b. The application should also provide the ability for users to search for all the products which are using a particular part.

Q 9 – Planning and Allocation
An inventory management system is supposed to help a retail super market chain manage its stock levels and stock display. Individual shops have RFID and bar code devices to keep a check on the inventory on hand. As and when the stocks fall below a threshold at individual shops, the application is supposed to raise an order at the warehouse to send the corresponding stock levels to the organization.

a. The application should allow users to enter the stock on hand, stock moving out of the shop and threshold levels for each individual item.
b. When the stock on hand reaches below the threshold level, the corresponding order should be sent to the warehouse.
c. The application should provide an option for rejecting the order based on various reasons including non-availability of goods and any quality issues with the goods. This should ensure that the display place for the stock in the super market is allocated to some other stock.

Q 10 – Applicant Matching
An application is needed for the hiring department to conduct a survey of the entire staff to figure out what is not right in the organization. The application should allow the users to create the survey questions.

e.g.: The question could be, “How do you feel about the environment in the organization?” The answers should be in a 5 point scale, (1-5) like “Strongly disagree”, “disagree”, “somewhat agree”, “agree”, “strongly agree”.

a. The hiring department users should be able to create any number of questions. They should then be able to get answers from the users and collate the results.
b. They should then be able to produce an average score for all the questions on per used basis. Based on the average score, they should be able to produce a report mentioning how many users fall between:
1 – 2 (strongly disagree, disagree)
3 (somewhat agree)
4 – 5 (agree, strongly agree)
c. The hiring department users should also be able to list the users disagreeing or agreeing on a specific question.
