Author Need suggestions for a good open source database.

I know that OpenOffice 2.0 will have a database that comes along with it.
Before getting too involved with one database system I'm curious as to what
is out there for the Windows OS. I need something that has a good user
interface. I need something free to start a database for a scouting pack
that will need to be handed over to someone else in the future. Should I
just wait for a stable release of OpenOffice 2.0? (My background with
database design is with Alpha Five and with Access. My technical prowess
doesn't go much beyond that.)

Those are very good. Another that works is mySQL.

I'm used to a database that has a user interface. From what I see about
these two, commands are either done in DOS or you get a third party's GUI.
Could you suggest a GUI to use? Is there an opensource one that you would
recommend? Thanks.

I seem to recall that mySQL had some pretty good open source front-ends - have
you done a search in either google.com or in sf.net ? What SQL Server backend
did you finally decide upon? And have you accounted for the licensing of that
backend?

There's a Windows front-end that is only for VB6 experts at
http://sf.net/projects/vbutils, called SQLReviewer. It relies solely on ODBC
drivers. It's only alpha quality, however: it's not intended as an all-purpose
frontend, more of a way to execute the same queries over and over (with varying
parameters) from a menu-like interface. It will work with any ODBC data source,
but it is oriented towards Microsoft's MS SQL Server v7+.

There's also a closed source solution called WinSQL from
http://www.synametrics.com/Synametr...App/WinSQL.jsp, with a freeware release
(after registration). They don't bother one with any SPAM afaik.

I've looked at "Squirrel" - if you don't mind using Java apps, maybe that's a
solution for you?

There's another one in sf.net that's called something like database explorer
that I didn't like, can't remember why.

Thanks for the valuable information. I'll look at what you've suggested.
In the meantime Scouting does have a database for me to use. Discovered
this today. I only hope its decent.
