short answer is yes.

Long answer is:
yes for most spreadsheets, but some "fancy" excel did not show as well.
password were not supported last time I tried.
OpenOffice 2.0 is due soon [mar 05] with improvements in this area.
OpenOffice 1.9 is already available.
OpenOffice 1.2.x is stable and quite good.
If you have broadband, just try them! Does not take very long (about 100MB).
