Author License issues when porting a GPL component

Hi,

I'm not too sure of what happens when you decide to port a software
component released under the GPL license.

Imagine that you have a software component released under the GPL license.
You would like to integrate this component within your own application but
it has been developped in a language not compatible with it. So you decide
to port this component to another language. Is the port of this GPLed
component still under the GPL license or can you now use it freely within
your application without the restrictions of the GPL license?

The GPL license itself and the GPL FAQ make no mention of this. And as the
port does not contain any part of the original code, i assume that once
i've ported this component, it is not under the GPL license anymore. Am i
right about that?

Thanks for any clarification
