history of symmetric/asymmetric terminology

| Does anyone know when the use of the terms symmetric and asymmetric
came into use as a way to describe compression techniques? Can anyone
provide a citation to an article or publication from the '80s or
earlier that uses, and perhaps defines, this terminology?
-Thanks!
