Author history of symmetric/asymmetric terminology

Does anyone know when the use of the terms symmetric and asymmetric
came into use as a way to describe compression techniques? Can anyone
provide a citation to an article or publication from the '80s or
earlier that uses, and perhaps defines, this terminology?

try search on iterated systems and fractal compression. .fif file
extension.

I think this was the first time i heard it used in there promotional
material. I did have one of the demo floppy disks once and it was
quite astounding for the era.
