GIS raster formats

Hi!

I'm looking for information on latest advances in GIS raster formats.
Perhaps some reviews or other publications. I'm especially intrested in
compression methods used in multi- and hyperspectral formats and/or DEMs.

Any universities or groups who are actively studying this subject? I would
appreciate any links or pointers on the subject.

ps. Google gave me tons of links to common formats but none of them seemed
to provide any advanced methods to handle the massive amount of data and
channels (if one doesn't count JPEG2000).
