Author VS 2005: Resources for development of a server based application

I would like to create an application in VS 2005 that would sit on top of
IIS in Windows Server 2003 and have to capability to create forums or lists
that can be accessed via the mail, web, or newsgroup interface. Obviously,
there would have to be some mechanism to integrate the postings from the
three interfaces. If possible I'd like to use the built-in SMTP and NNTP
servers in Windows 2003 and somehow glue them together with the web server.
I know this is a very complex project but I'd really to take up this
challenge as a learning experience.

Could you suggest any resources where I could learn how to do this? I'd
really appreciate any help or advice that you can share.

Thanks,
J.S.
