Unspecified error when using SourceSafe from within Visual Studio 2003

I am a new to the Visual Studio and SourceSafe arena and need help. We have Visual Studio 2003 Enterprise and Visual SourceSafe 6.0d as fresh installs on several computers.

When attempting to check-out a project from SourceSafe (using File > Source Control > Open From Source Control...) we receive the "EXTREMELY" vague error message "Unspecified error" which describes the problem very succintly :> ). We recceive this message
on all machines. I have attempted to follow Micosoft's instructions for establishing a safe SourceSafe database. Which I had hoped would solve the problem but did not.

Any and all comments and suggestions would be welcome and greatly appreciated.
