Visual Studio - cannot open web project when web.config deny=?

cannot open web project when web.config deny=?

whenever i try and open my web project from visual studio.net i get an
error saying unable to open web projectX do you with to work offline.

if you select that it says unable to get the project file from the
webserver and sort of opens the solution but none of the files.

i narrowed this down to being when my web.config authorisation section
has a deny=?

if i change it to allow=* the project opens fine in vs.net, i then have
to revert the web.config back and everything proceeds as normal.

does anyone know of a way to circumvent this behaviour??
