Anyone hazard a guess why we get so many non-MSDN posts in here asking
technical questions about general programming issues?

Maybe it's the "General" in the title?

Cheers, Rob.

That and sometimes people posting through the web interface over at MS will
have their posts show up in incorrect newsgroups (or they just select the
wrong one to begin with).

It's time to remove all the other microsoft.public.msdn.* groups and
rename this group microsoft.public.msdn, one healthy group is better
than half-dozen falled ones. Asking for help on the other groups is
a waste of time and resources.

That's really not going to solve the issue of off-topic posts, just
consolidate them in one group.

IMO, the group names just need to be more explicit. For example:

microsoft.public.msdn.subscriptions.issues-with-using-library-but-not-how-to-program
microsoft.public.msdn.subscriptions.other-than-library-but-not-how-to-use-products-covered-by-other-newsgroups
microsoft.public.msdn.website.accessing-library-section
microsoft.public.msdn.website.sections-other-than-library
microsoft.public.msdn.library.bundled-with-vstudio.net-2005
microsoft.public.msdn.library.bundled-with-vstudio.net-2003
microsoft.public.msdn.library.bundled-with-original-vstudio.net
microsoft.public.msdn.library.bundled-with-old-vstudio-or-old-officedev
microsoft.public.msdn.library.bundled-with-vb-for-vb-programmers-who-dont-even-know-what-vstudio-is
microsoft.public.msdn.complaints.wanna-be-beta-testers
microsoft.public.msdn.complaints.certified-partners-who-dont-know-they-are-in-the-wrong-place
microsoft.public.msdn.complaints.why-cant-i-download-at-40bazillion-gigabits
microsoft.public.msdn.complaints.whining-that-subscription-should-include-every-microsoft-product-and-edition
microsoft.public.msdn.blatant-questions-from-pirates-trying-to-share-one-subscription
microsoft.public.msdn.hey-andy-when-is-xyz-going-to-be-posted-as-if-you-still-manage-that
