Author Vista to come w/ Professional Developers Subscription?
Vagabond Software

2006-01-17, 3:55 am

I am trying to decide between purchasing the Visual Studio 2005 Professional
Upgrade for $600 (more or less) or to get the Professional Developers
subscription for $1100 (more or less).

I notice that I get Operating Systems with the Professessional Subscription.
Will that automatically include Vista if Vista were released in the next 12
months?

Carl;
The current build of Vista is already included in MSDN subscriptions
Operating Systems and above.
Since those subscription levels already include the current OSs, Vista
should be included when it is released.

Based on the recent reworking of MSDN for VS2005 versions, "should" contains
a big "if" IMHO.
What many once thought was an all encompassing subscription has become
tiered in recent months so who knows what the future will hold. Perhaps MS
can make a statement on if this has been finalized.

Vista is an OS and is included in OSs and above.
The only question will it continue to be delivered as CD or download only.
But you could contact Customer Service for a definitive answer.

Also the future is always uncertain.
MSDN can give you an answer today.
Unless you order at that time, you are asking about the future and the
longer you wait between asking and acting, the less reliable any information
from any source may be.

I can say without fear of contradiction that the Vista RTM bits will
absolutely be provided on disc to all subscribers (except Library level).
Major pre-production builds are typically released to MSDN Subscriber
Downloads; I have not seen the plan for Beta 2 but there is a chance that
this would also be shipped on disc. The reason that we tend to release the
CTP builds only for download is that by the time a disc got through
production processes it would already be obsoleted by a newer Vista CTP. By
downloading, you can get the February CTP, for instance, in February and not
in the mail in April.

I'll leave the issue of the MSDN Subscription tiering alone, except to say
that the new Professional level subscription has the same products as the
old Pro level, and that the Premium level contains everything that used to
be in Universal, and is a few hundred bucks cheaper.

Thanks to everyone for their replies. It was very helpful. I have decided
to buy the subscription since I noticed that in addition to Vista, I also
have access to the 64-bit versions of XP and Server 2003.
