MSDN - dummy domain name

I have a server that is not online that is being used as a development box.
Some code developed by another individual is searching for the domain the
computer is on. Since this server is not on a domain I was wondering if
there is a way to fool it by giving it a domain. I tried but when I hit
enter the machine tried to find the named domain and could not because it is
offline. Any wisdom???
