Author how to access managed groups with xnews?
Daniel Miller

2005-02-10, 8:55 pm

I've just purchased MSDN Pro, and just got my subscriber number, set up my
profile, etc. I would like to access the managed groups via my normal
newsreader, rather than via the WebReader. The msdn site says I can do
this, but doesn't say how. I need to know the server address, at a
minimum.

Also, I set up a profile, and I let MS create a no-spam email address for
me. But, it hasn't told me *what* address it created!!

This is all very confusing!! I hope someone here can help me...

Daniel;
The newsgroups are the same.
The specific newsgroups managed by MSDN areon the left:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/newsgroups/managed/
You create the address, whatever you gave is your address.

Are you saying that the "microsoft.public.*" newsgroups ARE the managed
newsgroups?? then I'm not sure how the newsgroups are managed, if I use my
separate mail reader to post to these groups, do I have to post using the
public Email address that I specified to MS, before I'll get a response??

Also, the news service that I'm using only shows a small number of "msdn"
newsgroups. Is there a separate MS-run news server that I'm supposed to
read news from?? Again, I don't want to use WebReader, I want to use my
own news reader...

Daniel;
Not all the "microsoft.public.*" are the MSDN managed groups.
Just some, the ones on the left column of the link I gave.

Anyone can read and post to the MSDN newsgroups.
What makes you special as an MSDN subscriber is Microsoft promises to answer
your post if there is not a satisfactory answer given from someone.
So if you get a correct answer from Joe User, a Microsoft representative may
not answer since your issue is already resolved.
But if you do not get an answer, Microsoft should answer as long as you are
using the alias you are registered with.

If your news server does not have all Microsoft newsgroups, access the
Microsoft news server directly
The server is "msnews.microsoft.com"
You can configure any newsreaderincluding Outlook Express to directly access
the server.

To tag on to what Jupiter is saying.. If you are using a newsgroup client
instead of the webnews page.. You can reference the following link that is
offered once you register your no-spam alias to configure your client...

http://msdn.microsoft.com/subscript...ps/default.aspx

For a list of managed newsgroups please visit the following site..

Ahh, so!! Thank you, Jupiter and Stefan; all worked just as you
described, once I specified my own no-spam address... My problem was that
I had selected "let Microsoft generate an address for you" rather than
specifying my own, and that didn't seem to make things work somehow.

I'm now logged onto the msdn server just fine!!

Stefan,
I am a Universal subscriber and I agree with Daniel that the procedures and
the description of them leave room for confusion. For example, the only
apparent identification of the subscriber privilege is through recognition
of the email alias. I've asked myself the question what prevents someone
else from posting under my alias? Having no answer to this question has
left me wondering whether there is something about the process that I don't
understand. I made up and registered my alias some time ago and I posted my
first question today in win32.programmer.kernel. It is a repost of a
question I submitted 2 ws ago without my subscriber privilege that went
unanswered. Now I eagerly await my guaranteed answer.

Please register a valid no-spam alias and repost your question and we will
be more than happy to post a response...

Ps... Great no-spam alias... Will the NHL ever come to an agreement to
