Author Announcement: Vista 5231 is now available
Andy Boyd \(MS\)

2005-10-17, 6:55 pm

Vista build 5231 is now available for all MSDN subscribers to download from
MSDN Susbcriber Downloads. The product key is the same as for 5219 - now
renamed the "Vista CTP" key. There were some issues with the PDC build of
Vista (build 5219) that caused setup to fail when extracted by certain
software packages, I was able to test this build however using the Virtual
CD control panel.

Can it install on top of (overwrite) the previous public beta?

Jon

Downloading now.

Is the "F6 Floppy" issue fixed with this build - where additional drivers
could not be added during setup for such things as RAID controllers?

Thanks,
Jon

No idea, sorry. I think primarily we pushed to get this release to address
the 5291 install issues. Going forward, I'll try to get some information on
each build as to what the major improvements / changes / limitations are for
each build. (Just keep in mind please that these are interim builds and
this sort of documentation isn't always available to me to provide
externally, but I'll do what I can).

From what I've heard, No.
And even if, I would strongly advise not to do. It's way to early in stages.
unless you want soem nice days enjoying srewing up your installation.

Have a nice day!

Interestingly, I ran into something else entirely during the install.

I've followed the same pattern to install every previous version on a test
machine. I have Win2K3 on a primary partition and boot into it, and have
Vista installed on another partition on the same drive. I just start the
installer, tell it to blow away the existing Vista partition (which, at this
point, as far as the current/running OS is concerned, is just another data
partition) and install there.

This time around, when doing the disk selection, the Advanced button was
grayed out and stayed as such no matter what I tried, and I didn't have the
option to delete/reformat the partition. There wasn't enough free space
either, so I had to cancel the installer, use 2K3's Explorer to reformat the
partition and then restart Vista's installer. *Then* it let me install on
that (freshly formatted) partition...even though the Advanced button was
still grayed out.

Does this build include IIS?
