| hello everybody. i was just turned on to msdn subscriptions buy a friend of mine. he told me to check it out, so i have been. after checking i just cant figure something out. the price of a universal subscription is 2799. the price of visual studio .net 2
003 architect is 2499. now if the msdn subscription includes vstudio, plus ALL that other stuff like os's and sql server, why on earth would someone not want to spring for the extra 300 dollars to get the subscription? am i missing something here? i think
i also read that you can still use all the software after you subscription expires. could someone please clarify this for me. im really interested in getting one of them. thanks a lot.

| It is MS' way of enticing you to develop for their platform.
But...
Only you can use the s/w that comes with the subscription, which
means that if some one lives at home with you, you can't install
any of the software (in general) on their computer and have them
use it. I say "in general" because I believe that there is an exception,
perhaps some one will elaborate on this.
Also, the software provided is for development, debugging and testing
only. You can't use it for production or demos.
And of course, there is the "need to have" factor. If you have 2 PCs
and they already have Windows on them and all you need is VS,
then what are you going to do with all the other software? Of course,
this is academic, since it is better to have it when you need it, than
to discover that you need it and don't have it.
Good luck!

Shop around, you can find both for much cheaper. My advice, go with the
MSDN, you get almost every piece of software MS develops (for the public
that is : ) ), be it only for development, its still worth it. With mine,
I learned how to install active directory, set up exchange server, and now
I'm on to commerce server and biztalk, and as a developer, I'm updated with
the library, the sdk's and I get 4 support calls (whatever MS puts on a
value to these, the true value is the value your product not going out the
door and costing you, the later you are). And the part I especially like, I
will now be able to try out the next developing environment (VS 2005) and
keep up with the latest stuff and be better prepared for the next job.
To me its always been a no brainer. Just my opinion (based on experience).
