Subscription Renewals and Licenses

| I've been a MSDN subscriber for several years and have accumulated many dvds.
I have a desktop and laptop that I want to install Windows XP Pro on. If I
use an XP dvd from last year's subscription for one machine and a dvd from
this year's subscription for the other machine, will they be treated as the
same license when I go through product activation? My assumption is that
they are separate licenses.
Also, do I correctly recall that a single XP license can be used to install
Windows on one desktop and one laptop?
Thank you.

| You need to read the Master EULA sent with your MSDN subscription
The EULA allows for 10 installations of Windows XP.
It does not matter if they are desktops or laptops:

| Thank you for the information.
A couple of more related questions please:
I have a laptop that I had installed XP Pro on about a year ago. Due to
hardware failures, I have had to replace the motherboard and hard disk. I
need to re-install XP Pro on the laptop, but am concerned that this would
mean using another one of the 10 activations. How do I re-activate the
previous install for the laptop so that I am left with my previous 9
remaining activations.
Does the 10 activations distinguish between XP Pro and XP Home, or are
they considered part of the same 10 activations (I would assume they are
separate since they are different operating systems, just like XP vs. 2000).
Thank you.

| Windows XP Home and Pro are separate so with a single MSDN
subscription you are entitled to 10 installations each.
Also it is my understanding you can have up 10 installations of each
at a time.
If one is removed another can be installed.
It is not install 10 times and then you are done.

That's my understanding, too, but the activations will still be
limited to 10, and if you remove an installation and want to use it
again you'd have to call MSDN customer service to get more activations
(that's according to the FAQ at
http://msdn.microsoft.com/subscriptions/faq/).

On going a bit more deeply into the FAQ, I found:
Although you must go through the activation process each time you
reinstall on the same PC, your total number of activations will not be
decremented.
Though I don't know how this will work with a computer whose
motherboard has been changed.

| You can install it unlimited number of times, but on no more then 10
machines.

I hope it helps!
