Author Using Newsgroup Reader at 1920X1200 Resolution

Has anyone else tried to use the newgroup reader in IE with Windows XP/SP2 at
1920X1200 resolution and 120 DPI fonts. I'm using a Dell Inspiron 9100
notebook with an ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9700 display adapter at this native
resolution and the pages hangup Internet Explorer when you select them.

If I lower the resolution, the everything works.

I personally have not had a chance to debug this issue.

Thanks,

Michael

Michael,

I have a 9100 with Radeon 9800 and Outlook Express works fine at that
resolution with SP2. However, I'm running at 96dpi. The first thing I did
when I got the system was reformat it because I could visibly see less than
on my 1280x1024 desktop at 120dpi. The auto scaling of fonts/icons that Dell
installs by default makes having such a system a nonsense, to me at least.

Have you applied all the MS updates? Perhaps there's a newer ATI driver? I
also found a lot of helpful items about this system in the Dell forum on the
US web site.

HTH, Loz.

Lawrence:

I'm using IE to view the newsgroup, not Outlook Express. Everything is also
up to date.

I don't get it. I wasn;t aware that IE had a built in newreader. Even
Outlook doesn't, which is why I use Outlook Express.

Or are you going to some web site to read a specific group? If you give me
the link, I'll try it on my system.

Loz.

XP/SP2[color=darkred]

I only have SP1 but I have no problem with IE or OE at 2048x1536, 1920x1440,
1920x1200, or the usual resolution I use which is 1856x1392. I have a Dell
Dimension 2300 with the on-board graphics in an Intel Extreme controller.
I've never had any problem with OE at any resolution on any system that I've
used up to 2048x1536 resolution in WinXP or Win2K -- but I do not have SP2
and I do not have an ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 so all I can assure you is
that the program seems to be fine at those screen dimensions.

I want to make sure I'm clear. I'm using the web-based version of the
newsgroup with IE6 not the NNTP version in Outlook Express or anything else.
Is that what everyone else is using?

I'm using the NNTP version but I've looked at the web-version for groups I
don't read regularly from time to time and I've never had a problem. Is
there a specific group that's giving you a problem? Would you post the URL
so we can try it too?

No they all give me trouble. It looks like the page is about to be
completely loaded then IE just hangs consuming 100% CPU like in a race
condition.

I know someone else who has this system and maybe I'll try their machine
with their user profile to see if everything works.

Thanks,

Michael

I'm sure both Norm and myself would love to help you.... but its a bit
difficult if you don't give us what we are asking for....

So for the third time, please post a URL to the newsgroup site that giving
you issues.

Loz.

I guess I don't understand what you're asking for.

Since the post was to an MSDN newsgroup concerning the use of the web-based
reader, I was assuming that you understood from the context that it was any
of the http://msdn.microsoft.com/newsgroup listings that failed.

Sorry for the confusion.

No problem. I just went to the MSDN newsgroups page and checked if things
worked. Unfortunately, they did work, no problem.

So then I grabbed my mate's 9100 and tried it there. Same thing... success.

The interesting thing (from your point of view) is that the second laptop is
running 1920x1200 at 120dpi on a Radeon 9700. Exactly the same setup as
yours.

Just so you can check, here's the driver version info:

Manufacturer: ATI Technologies Inc
Date: 17.07.2004
Version: 6.14.10.6467

Does it match yours?

Loz.

Are you saying that you can't use IE to read the Microsoft newsgroups but it
functions perfectly 100% of the time at other sites?

I just tried the .NET - general group at

http://msdn.microsoft.com/newsgroup...l&lang=en&cr=US
using my desktop computer at both 1920x1440 and 1920x1200 and had no
problems whatsoever.

Do you have the latest device drivers for your display system? If you've
download newer one, you might try reverting to the older set for a test.

My system matches yours as far as driver version/date goes.

I just tried another 9100 system I have access to (using different login and
user profile) which has a slightly older driver version. The first time I
tried to view one of the MSDN newsgroups, IE hung at 100% CPU consumption
just as my system does. However, after killing IE and trying again
everything worked. My system always hangs.

I have no other problems that I'm aware of.

What version of IE are you using? Mine's 6.0.2900.2180 which comes with XP
SP2. I doubt it could be the drivers since they work fine on two systems
here.
