Author Migrating reports help

Hi,

I have been given the task of migrating complex reports from one site
to another. These reports have a vb2 front end, on top of crystal
reports, which extracts data from a Sybase database.

Unfortunately I do not know visual basic but i have been informed that
out pc's at the new site are not compatible with vb2, this site uses
vb6. Whilst trawling the net it appears that you cannot upgrade from
vb2 to vb6 without losing a lot of info. My boss suggests we completely
rewrite these reports. But i do not know vb........

Any suggestions? Is it possible to remove the vb front end and replace
with another suitable application?

Any help would be a greatly appreciated as I have just been dumped with
this at work and cannot get out of doing it (panic mode had completely
set in)

Thanks

Flick

This is so close to a Dilbert joke it is hard to take it seriously.
[Your pointy-haired boss is obviously insane.]

VB2 is a 16-bit application. 16-bit apps can be ported to 32-bit
applications(VB6) without "losing a lot of info", but it would take someone
who 'knows visual basic' or at least someone willing to become a fast study.
[What good is it for anyone to post suggestions, if you don't know VB?]

For that matter, 16-bit applications should be able to run on any Windows
Platform.
[Why are these new PCs incompatiable?]

It is quite possible to replace the "vb front end" with another "suitable
application" - so what language/development platform do you know?
[What version of Crystal? What version Sybase? And just who is on top of who
again?]

Most likely it is VB3 - not VB2

I would be surprized to see a Win32 machine that did not run VB3 Apps

Your boss is a dickhead
a) because he has not checked whether the reports need to be
re-written

b) because he gave you the problem
- he should have given it to an experienced VB3 -> 6 migrator

Dickhead or Insane?

I suspect that when and if we get the complete story the "real issue" will
be different than originally advertised. The OP is describing a situation
seldom seen outside a cartoon or Wal-Mart. <g>

Sadly, that's just not so.
As a consultant, I've seen that sort of thing scary-often.

A very unusual, but not high priority, need arises.
A decent boss will ask "who's qualified?"
The PHB will only ask "who's available?"
